World Food Safety Day is significant for various reasons:
Public Health
Food safety is critical to the public’s health. Foodborne infections caused by contaminated or unhealthy food can cause serious health problems and even death. According to the WHO, 600 million people become ill and 420,000 die each year as a result of foodborne infections. The importance of safe food practices in protecting public health and preventing the spread of foodborne illnesses is highlighted on World Food Safety Day.
Global Cooperation
World Food Safety Day is a platform for encouraging international cooperation and collaboration in tackling food safety challenges. It brings together governments, organizations, enterprises, and consumers to share food safety management knowledge, best practices, and experiences. Collaboration at the local, national, and international levels is critical for developing and implementing effective food safety measures.
Food Security
Food security is inextricably related to food safety. Food safety issues can jeopardize food security by causing sickness, lowering productivity, and impacting economic growth. World Food Safety Day helps the overarching objective of ensuring food security for everyone, which is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by promoting food safety.
Consumer Awareness
World Food Safety Day is critical in increasing public awareness of food safety issues. It encourages people to become more knowledgeable and vigilant about the safety and quality of the food they consume. Consumers may make better choices, handle food properly, and demand responsibility from food producers and suppliers through education and information campaigns.
Sustainable Development
Food safety is an essential component of long-term development. It covers a wide range of topics, including food production, processing, storage, distribution, and consumption. Food safety helps to reduce food waste, improve food quality, and promote sustainable farming practices. World Food Safety Day emphasizes the importance of sustainable and responsible food production and consumption.

The FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme is implemented by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), which backed a proposal to observe World Food Safety Day in 2016. A year later, in July, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) at its 40th session backed the notion by adopting a resolution that was also supported by WHO.
Finally, the United Nations General Assembly established World Food Safety Day in its resolution 73/250 on December 20, 2018. On June 7, 2019, the first World Food Safety Day was marked, commemorating a watershed moment in worldwide efforts to address food safety issues. Furthermore, on August 3, 2020, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA73.5 to recognize and highlight the importance of World Food Safety Day as a key pedestal to raise global awareness about food safety, prevent foodborne illness, and strengthen global efforts to maintain food safety.
