A massive fire broke out at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The fire broke out at the airport’s 3C departure terminal building’s check-in counter and was put out by eight firefighting tenders. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia described the situation as “unfortunate,” adding that he was in contact with airport officials and that no casualties had been recorded.
“An unexpected but minor fire broke out near the check-in counter at Kolkata airport.” Everything is under control now that I’ve spoken with the airport director. The area has been cleared of all passengers and crew. Everyone is safe, and no injuries have been recorded. At 22:25 hours, the check-in procedure was restarted. “The cause of the fire will be determined as soon as possible,” he tweeted.
Images circulating on social media show a piece of the check-in area engulfed in flames with a crimson color. Airport authorities safely evacuated passengers from the terminal.
The Kolkata airport reported on Twitter, “There was a minor fire & smoke on the check-in area portal D at 2112 pm. It was completely extinguished by 2140 pm.” All passengers have been safely evacuated, and the check-in procedure has been halted owing to the presence of smoke in the check-in area. Check-in at 10:15 p.m., and operations will continue.”
According to CISF, “a fire broke out at the D portal check-in counter.” Passengers and workers were evacuated from the terminal building due to smoke. There were no reported injuries. The fire has been put out. Normal operations are being resumed.”
The airport officials have temporarily halted the check-in procedure for safety concerns.
