D.Y. Chandrachud takes the oath of office as India's 50th Chief Justice. President Droupadi Murmu appoints

him in brief ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He refers to dissent as the "safety valve of democracy,"

says CJI. D Y Chandrachud is sworn in as India's Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday. He succeeds

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, who left office on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished him a successful

future at the swearing-in ceremony. The Chief Justice of India's top court, Justice D Yashwantrao Chandrachud,

has served on the bench that decriminalised same-sex relationships. He has also served on benches

that have rendered decisions on abortion and the euthanasia of unmarried women.

Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India.

For two years, he will be the CJI. He practised law at the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court.

He has been a Visiting Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law at the University of Mumbai.
