Indian Army STEAG: The Indian Army starts an elite unit to research and evaluate future communication technologies that can be used for military purposes. This unit is name as Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG).
What is STEAG?
STEAG stands for Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group .
Its is an elite technology unit that will conduct research and evaluation of future communication technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, 6G, machine learning, and quantum technologies for defense purpose of Indian Army. Today, on March 18th, officials officially announced the establishment of this unit.
What is the use of STEAG?
The formation of STEAG is part of the Army’s efforts to develop technologies for the future battlefield. The army officials says, “STEAG will be the nursery for nurturing and developing tailored technologies spanning the complete spectrum of wired and wireless systems to include electronic exchanges, mobile communications, Software Defined Radios (SDR), Electronic Warfare (EW) systems, 5G and 6G networks, among others.”
Moreover, the official adds that, “It will be a premier organisation, the first of its kind, equipped with the capability to harness niche technology, leverage cutting edge solutions and identify suitable use-cases for defence applications by fostering collaboration and partnership with academia and industry.”
STEAG Keeping up with Technology
According to one of the officials, “STEAG will conduct technical scouting, evaluation, development, and management of core ICT solutions. Along with this they will provide user interface support through the maintenance and upgrade of current technologies available in the environment.”
Army Chief General Manoj Pande has emphasized the importance of acquiring new technologies by the force in light of the changing nature of warfare.
In interview with Press Trust India – an news agency; An Army official says, “Aligning itself with the tenets of Atma Nirbhar Bharat and Start-Up India, STEAG will help bridge the divide between the armed forces on the one hand and industry and academia on the other.”
“The new Centre of Excellence is expected to be a game changer in promoting self-reliance in high-end communication technologies, which have previously been monopolized by select countries with advanced economies and research ecosystems”, he added.
The Army believes communication will be an important part of military operations.
“In the fast-evolving technologies for the battlefield, the side with better communication technologies and the ability to connect the various constituents for information sharing will have an edge over its adversary,” another official said.
He stated that modern warfare necessitates the introduction of new equipment to provide continuous communication support to units and formations throughout operations.
“To imbibe such advancements in technology, the Indian Army has raised this groundbreaking technology-oriented unit STEAG, which will bolster its capabilities in the digital domain,” he added.
