Sergio Garcia came to the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in England last week after placing tied

for ninth at the LIV Golf Invitational Boston during Labor Day weekend.

He hoped to vie for the top place and increase his Official World Golf Ranking from No. 77.

Garcia, who departed the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Ryder Cup, blasted a 4-over 76 in his first round on Thursday.

Garcia's next opportunity to play was Saturday after the second round on Friday was postponed by the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Garcia's choice to accept a berth in the tournament that might have gone to someone else before

withdrawing after one round to watch a football game 5,000 miles away is unlikely to win him friends.

A person who has known Garcia throughout his career told Golfweek that his real colours are now evident in technicolour.
