A two-story godown fell on Saturday in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra’s Thane district, killing three people, including a child girl, and rescuing at least 11 others, according to a civic official, while 10 people are still presumed trapped.

According to Avinash Sawant, Regional Disaster Management Cell chief, the ground-plus-two-story godown is in Wardhaman Compound in Valpada in Mankoli, which collapsed at 1:45 p.m., contained four families on the higher levels and laborers on the first level.

Rescue activities have been ongoing for the past eight hours, with a dog squad and two earthmovers being sent late in the evening, according to Mr. Sawant.

A four-and-a-half-year-old kid, a 26-year-old woman, and a 40-year-old man were pulled from the rubble, while 11 people were rescued and are being treated for injuries. We think that ten people are still trapped beneath, Mr. Sawant remarked late at night.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde offered his condolences and provided a 5 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased, while the state government would cover the medical expenses of the injured.

Mr Shinde went to the location late at night.

According to an official announcement, the Chief Minister has directed authorities to maintain adequate coordination among every agency participating in the search and rescue activities.

Officials had said that teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)  as well as 10 fire engines and employees from other agencies from Bhiwandi and Thane, were participating in the search and rescue activities.

In the presence of Union Minister Kapil Patil, Lok Sabha MP from Bhiwandi, senior authorities, including Thane Collector Ashok Shingare, were supervising the search and rescue activities.
