Instagram was down for a few hours on Sunday evening. The app’s feed was stopped, throwing users warnings indicating that it couldn’t update, while the website merely displayed a blank page.
According to the outage tracker DownDetector, the earliest reports of problems occurred a few minutes after 6 p.m. ET, before skyrocketing to over 175,000 complaints at its peak, but by 7:30 p.m. ET, the problem had been resolved and the service was back up and running.

“Earlier today, a technical issue affected some people to have difficulty accessing Instagram,” stated Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold in an email to The Verge following the outage. We worked rapidly to rectify the issue for everyone who was affected, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Given the date, the outage rapidly became part of Australia’s Monday morning news bulletins.
Other services managed by Instagram’s parent company, Meta, appear to be unaffected, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Horizon Worlds. There’s no evidence of problems like the big data center backbone issue that knocked the company’s services offline for hours in 2021.
Instagram’s help page, and profiles on other platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, have not been updated on the outage. An Instagram-owned service like Twitter would be a wonderful place to start, but it doesn’t exist yet, despite rumors and leaks.
