India’s medical professionals are again fighting for another virus “Tomato flu”. In India, there have been up to 82 cases till date of tomato flu since the virus was first discovered. Lancet research published on Saturday,the very first case was found In Kerala on May 6.

Experts state – the flu is mostly affecting the children between 1-5 yrs. They added that the new variant of hand,foot & mouth,can also affect adults with weak immune systems.
About -“TOMATO FLU”
Tomato flu,a virus mostly affecting children between 1-5yrs in hands. It leaves reddish marks on their hands & feet. The virus was discovered in Kerala on 6th of May,2022.
Experts say the flu has symptoms similar to those of Covid-19 but isn’t related to SARS-CoV-2. Researchers say it isn’t very likely to be a communicable disease. However, it might prove to be an after-effect of chikungunya or dengue fever in kids.
The name “Tomato Flu” was given,as it leads to enlarged (like tomato) red spots & painful blisters throughout the body.
SYMPTOMS
Children suffer with high fever, rashes, and excruciating joint pain. All these symptoms of tomato flu are comparable to those of chikungunya.Some symptoms include body pains, fever, and weariness, usually comparable to those that Covid-19 symptoms.
Other symptoms include joint swelling, nausea, diarrhoea, dehydration, joint pain, and a high temperature.

In a few instances, individuals also mentioned getting skin rashes.Additional symptoms listed in the study include tiredness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, dehydration, joint swelling, body pains, and typical influenza-like symptoms, which are similar to those experienced by dengue sufferers.
TREATMENT
Treatments for chikungunya, dengue, and hand, foot, and mouth illness are analogous to those for tomato flu. For the treatment of irritation and rashes, patients are recommended to isolate themselves, relax, drink lots of fluids, and use a hot water sponge.The research concluded that “Supportive therapy with paracetamol for fever and bodyache and other symptomatic therapies are indicated.”
DIAGNOSIS
Patients exhibiting the aforementioned symptoms should undergo molecular and serological testing to rule out herpes, varicella-zoster, varicella-zoster virus, dengue, and chikungunya. The presence of the tomato virus is established once these viral diseases have been ruled out.
