Removal of Article 370: The Supreme Court’s Constitution bench is likely to rule today, December 11, on a batch of petitions contesting the repeal of Article 370 and the division of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories. Security has been increased in Srinagar ahead of the major ruling.
Ahead of the Supreme Court decision, appropriate security measures have been taken to guarantee a tranquil environment in Kashmir. According to Kashmir Zone V K Birdi, “we are duty-bound to make sure that peace prevails in the valley under all circumstances.”

The IGP had merely stated that “adequate arrangements” had been put in place without providing any information about the security setup for today. “We are taking all precautions and will ensure that peace in Kashmir is not disturbed,” Birdi told PTI, after holding security review meetings in most of the valley’s ten districts over the previous two weeks.
According to the article, authorities established rules for social media users under CrPC section 144 to prevent the transmission of anything that is communally sensitive or advocates terrorism and secessionism.
“The guidelines seek to provide clarity on actions citizens should take when facing content related to terrorism, secessionism, threats, intimidation, or communally sensitive material on social media platforms,” according to a circular issued by police in numerous districts and reported by PTI.
Meanwhile, the decision will be made by a five-judge constitution bench consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Sanjay Kishan Kaul, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant. Earlier on September 5, the Supreme Court deferred its decision after hearing arguments for 16 days.
The Centre has defended its decision to remove Article 370, claiming that there was no “constitutional fraud” in deleting the clause that granted the former state of Jammu and Kashmir unique status.
What is Article 370 Abrogation?
On August 5, 2019, the government made a “groundbreaking decision” to remove the provisions of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that provided the state of Jammu and Kashmir special status. As a result, the Indian Constitution was amended to include Jammu and Kashmir “on par with other states/UTs of the country.”
