The split between Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik was expected. The writing was on the wall. It only received formal recognition when the former Pakistan cricket captain turned to social media on Saturday to publish photos of his second marriage to actress Sana Javed. Later, a family member of Sania revealed that the former Indian tennis star initiated the divorce procedure by exercising “khula,” a Muslim woman’s prerogative to unilaterally divorce her spouse.
Sania’s decision to break her relationship with Shoaib was clear when the multiple Grand Slam winner (in doubles) made mysterious statements on Instagram stories. About a week ago, she said on Instagram, “When something disturbs the peace of your heart, let it go,” with a photo of herself standing in front of a mirror with her eyes closed.

A few days ago, she posted a statement regarding marriage, divorce, communication, and life.
“Marriage is hard; divorce is hard. Choose your difficulty. Obesity is difficult. Being fit is difficult; choose your own level of difficulty. Being in debt is difficult. Maintaining financial discipline is difficult. Choose your difficulty. Communication is difficult. No communication is difficult. Life will never be easy. I’ll always be hard. However, we have the option of selecting our difficulty. “Pick wisely,” the quote in her article stated.
The relationship between the sports icons was strained. Rumors of a prospective breakup have circulated since 2022. They lost steam significantly when Shoaib and Sania appeared on a discussion program called ‘The Mirza Malik program’.
However, the murmurs resumed when Shoaib and Sania began making adjustments to their social media profiles. Shoaib altered his Instagram bio, which previously read “Proud husband to a Superwoman @MirzaSania”. The pair also began storing or deleting their photos jointly.
The former Pakistani all-rounder recently unfollowed Sania.
On January 20, Shoaib shared a wedding photo with his new bride on social networking site X, with the caption “And We created you in pairs”.
Shoaib and Sania married in the Indian player’s birthplace of Hyderabad in April 2010, and the couple previously lived in Dubai. They have a son named Ihzaan who lives with Sania.
