The European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) requires large internet businesses to make significant changes to comply with new laws. The DMA comprises two messaging apps: WhatsApp and Messenger. In 2022, the European Union emphasized that messaging services designated as gatekeepers must meet a critical requirement: maintaining interoperability among messaging platforms. The latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS, as discovered by WABetaInfo via Matt Navarra, has a hidden “third-party chats” feature. This functionality is anticipated to enable users to access discussions from other messaging services such as Telegram and Discord. The adoption is consistent with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which promotes interoperability among major messaging systems. This program aims to give people the ability to connect across several platforms without having to download extra applications just because they are popular.

Apple’s iMessage is also on the EU’s radar. The Cupertino powerhouse was investigated by the EU for suspected antitrust violations, but the business claims exemption from DMA restrictions since the iMessage service is only used by 45 million people in the EU and does not touch as many people. A new report shows that the European Commission believes Apple’s reasoning is acceptable, while a final verdict is still pending.
If the EU rules in Apple’s favor, the company will be allowed to avoid DMA responsibilities. If not, iMessage will have to offer third-party conversations for European consumers.
Meanwhile, in response to regulatory pressure from the EU’s DMA, Apple made the strategic decision late last year to include the RCS messaging standard into its messaging platform, iMessage. This functionality will be implemented in late 2024 as part of an upcoming software upgrade. “Later next year, we will add support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard currently published by the GSM Association.” “We believe that RCS Universal Profile will provide a better interoperability experience than SMS or MMS,” Apple added.
