The allure of witnessing live cricket action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) often leads fans to seek tickets through various channels. However, a recent incident in Bengaluru highlights the risks associated with purchasing tickets online. A 43-year-old woman fell victim to a scam while attempting to buy tickets for the IPL 2024 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) held on March 29 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
The Scam Unfolds
In her quest for tickets, the woman stumbled upon a Facebook account named ‘IPL Cricket Ticket’ and reached out to book tickets for her friends and family. Upon contacting the account, she was provided with a mobile number to further discuss the ticket purchase. Little did she know, she was about to become a victim of fraud.
The fraudster, posing as a legitimate ticket seller for the IPL 2024 event, persuaded the woman to purchase approximately 20 tickets. Initially, he requested a payment of INR 8,000 to block the tickets, followed by additional charges totalling INR 11,000. As the woman complied with the demands, the fraudster continued to exploit her trust, requesting further payments totalling INR 86,265.
Realization and Action
Upon the fraudster’s demand for a final transaction of INR 21,000, the woman demanded either the tickets or a refund. Sensing the deception, she insisted on taking action and filed a police complaint the following day. The Begur police station registered a case under both the Information Technology Act and IPC Sections 419 and 420, emphasizing the seriousness of the scam.
Lessons Learned and Precautions
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with purchasing tickets from unauthorized sources online. To mitigate the chances of falling victim to scams, fans must exercise caution and adhere to official ticketing channels recommended by the authorities. As per the Karnataka State Cricket Association, IPL tickets are exclusively sold online through the RCB’s official website and at offline counters a couple of days before the game. By following these guidelines, fans can safeguard themselves against fraudulent activities and enjoy the IPL 2024 experience without fear of being duped.
