It was about 15 minutes into ‘Bastar: The Naxal Story’ when a man gets hacked to death in the most violent manner possible. The Maoist leader Lanka Reddy (Vijay Krishna) cuts a hand, and blood sprays everywhere. Before you can register it, another blow is delivered to the neck. This becomes more severe, and then it strikes the face. He then goes into an uproar, destroying everything until only pieces remain.

In the movie, the Naxals’ complicated history may be summarized in one sentence. That is they are anti-nationals and the nation’s deadliest enemy, seeking to separate it. They intend to get into the government via ‘the media, Bollywood, NGOs, and courts’ and destroy the system from within.

The organization is considered the third-largest terrorist organization after ISIS and Boko Haram. Further, it is believed it has close ties to Lashkar-E-Taiba, the Spanish and Philippine Communist Parties and more. However, as expected, the depiction only goes to some extent into Naxalbari and more on how and why they took over Bastar.

At the center of it is IPS Neerja Madhavan (Adah Sharma), who is on a mission to wipe out the Naxals from Bastar. She will do whatever it takes to assist the villagers. If she comes across a Naxal, she will shoot them as quickly as possible. She is prepared to face consequences. This includes returning to the Home Minister and calling him inefficient in front of him (no surprise, it must be set in 2010). She is charged with extra-judicial murders by Neelam (Shilpa Shukla). Neelam also fights for the ban on Salwa Judum at the beginning of the film. However, we see her real side as the film progresses.

On what movie is based on?

The movie appears to be based on the 2010 incident in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh, in which 76 CRPF jawans were murdered. However, that is not the only incident being discussed. There are ‘INU’ students celebrating the death of ’76 dogs’, as one student refers to them. It also goes back to 2013, when the Salwa Judum chief was assassinated.
