‘De De Pyaar De 2’ Review: Rakul Preet Shines, Madhavan Steals The Show In A Fun, Feisty Sequel

The much-awaited sequel to De De Pyaar De is finally here, and director Anshul Sharma brings back the same breezy chaos—this time with a fresh twist that lands more often than it misses. The rom-com walks into theatres right in the middle of the wedding season, and honestly, that vibe fits perfectly.

A Fresh Spin On An Unconventional Love Story

Six years after the original charmed audiences with its unapologetic take on age-gap romance, the sequel picks up with Ashish Mehra (Ajay Devgn) and Ayesha (Rakul Preet Singh) navigating yet another complicated chapter. This round, it’s Ayesha’s turn to take Ashish home—to her “progressive” Punjabi family that turns out to be progressive only on paper.

R. Madhavan enters as Ayesha’s father, and his casting is a masterstroke. What starts as a seemingly chill, modern dad quickly unravels into a protective parent who sees Ashish not just as an older partner—but as a threat to family honour. The clash is loud, messy, and very relatable in typical Indian households.

Madhavan Dominates Every Frame

While the film carries Devgn’s signature swag, Madhavan walks away with the spotlight. He brings charm, humour, and a surprising amount of emotional depth to a role that could’ve easily slipped into caricature territory. His fatherly panic attacks, passive-aggressive taunts, and awkward confrontations give the film some of its funniest—and most honest—moments.

Devgn, meanwhile, steps back when needed and lets the writing breathe. Interestingly, it’s his chemistry with Jaaved Jaaferi that delivers the sharpest laughs this time, backed by clever references to movies like Shaitan and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

Rakul Preet Singh Holds Her Ground

Rakul once again plays Ayesha with confidence and flair. This time, her character isn’t just the younger girlfriend in an “odd” relationship—she’s someone fighting to be taken seriously. Her journey is written with more agency, and she handles it with ease. She looks great on screen, yes, but her performance isn’t reduced to just glamour.

Meezan Jaaferi adds an extra pinch of fun as the third angle, and his scenes with father Jaaved Jaaferi carry a delightful, meta energy.

Where The Film Stumbles

The sequel’s biggest challenge is the surprise factor—because the universe, humor style, and storytelling pattern are familiar by now. The middle stretch drags a bit and feels louder than needed. A few repetitive emotional beats could’ve easily been trimmed.

Still, the film wraps up strong, leaving viewers with a warm aftertaste, even if the journey wasn’t entirely smooth.

Verdict

De De Pyaar De 2 stays true to its universe—messy families, generational clashes, complicated love stories, and loads of humour. Madhavan elevates the film, Rakul delivers a grounded performance, and Devgn plays along comfortably. Despite a slightly bloated middle, the sequel manages to entertain with its heart in the right place.

The film is currently running in theatres across India.
