The GATE 2026 examination season is almost here, and thousands of engineering aspirants across India are gearing up for one of the country’s most competitive tests. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering will begin on February 7, with IIT Guwahati conducting the national-level exam over four days in computer-based mode.
The test will be held on February 7, 8, 14 and 15, split into two shifts daily. Candidates are now being advised to download their admit cards, double-check details, and prepare all required documents well in advance to avoid last-minute hassles at the exam centre.

Exam dates and shift timings
GATE 2026 will run in two sessions each day.
The forenoon shift will take place from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, while the afternoon shift is scheduled from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
Candidates must check their exact shift, paper code and exam centre address on the admit card. These details can vary from student to student, so relying on assumptions can lead to confusion on the day of the test.
Reach early, not at the last minute
Officials have clearly stated that students should arrive at least 60 to 90 minutes before the reporting time.
Entry gates usually close before the exam begins, and latecomers may not be allowed inside, even if they are just a few minutes late. Since biometric verification and ID checks are mandatory, reaching early gives you enough breathing space.

Computer-based test format
The exam will be conducted online in computer-based mode.
A virtual on-screen calculator will be provided during the test. Personal calculators or any external devices are strictly banned. Rough work will be done only on sheets provided at the centre.

Dress and behaviour guidelines
Wear simple, comfortable clothes without too many accessories. Avoid anything that may slow down security checks.
Follow invigilators’ instructions carefully. Writing your name and registration number on rough sheets before using them is mandatory. Any rule violation can lead to cancellation of candidature.
