The test will be held on February 7, 8, 14 and 15, split into two shifts daily. Candidates are now being advised to download their admit cards, double-check details, and prepare all required documents well in advance to avoid last-minute hassles at the exam centre.

Here’s a simple breakdown of everything you need to know before stepping out on exam day.

    Exam dates and shift timings

GATE 2026 will run in two sessions each day.

The forenoon shift will take place from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, while the afternoon shift is scheduled from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

Candidates must check their exact shift, paper code and exam centre address on the admit card. These details can vary from student to student, so relying on assumptions can lead to confusion on the day of the test.

Reach early, not at the last minute

Officials have clearly stated that students should arrive at least 60 to 90 minutes before the reporting time.

Entry gates usually close before the exam begins, and latecomers may not be allowed inside, even if they are just a few minutes late. Since biometric verification and ID checks are mandatory, reaching early gives you enough breathing space.

A calm start can make a big difference in a high-pressure exam like GATE.

    Computer-based test format

The exam will be conducted online in computer-based mode.

A virtual on-screen calculator will be provided during the test. Personal calculators or any external devices are strictly banned. Rough work will be done only on sheets provided at the centre.

    Documents you must carry

This part is non-negotiable. Without proper documents, entry will not be allowed.

    Carry the following:

    • Hard copy of GATE 2026 admit card (A4 size print, clear photo visible)
    • Original photo ID proof used during registration

    Accepted IDs include:

    • Aadhaar card
    • Passport
    • Voter ID
    • Driving licence
    • PAN card

Photocopies or digital versions on mobile phones will not be accepted. Only originals are valid.

Candidates should also read the instructions on the admit card to check if a passport-size photograph is required.

    Items strictly not allowed

Think minimal when packing for the exam.

    Do not carry:

    • Mobile phones
    • Smart watches
    • Calculators
    • Notes or books
    • Study material
    • Electronic gadgets
    • Bags

Centres generally do not take responsibility for personal belongings, so it’s better to leave unnecessary items at home.

    Dress and behaviour guidelines

Wear simple, comfortable clothes without too many accessories. Avoid anything that may slow down security checks.

Follow invigilators’ instructions carefully. Writing your name and registration number on rough sheets before using them is mandatory. Any rule violation can lead to cancellation of candidature.

    Why GATE matters

GATE scores are widely used for MTech and PhD admissions, PSU recruitments, and higher studies opportunities in India and abroad. For many engineering graduates, this exam opens doors to top institutes and government jobs.

A little preparation around logistics — documents, timing, and rules — can save unnecessary stress and help you focus only on the paper.

If you’re appearing this year, keep it simple: print your admit card, carry your ID, reach early, and stay calm.
