Why the ₹8,000 Price Rumour Started
Over the past few months, online chatter suggested that Grand Theft Auto VI could launch internationally at $100, which would translate to roughly ₹8,000–₹8,500 in India for the Standard Edition.
Naturally, this raised eyebrows. For context, most AAA titles currently launch at around $70 globally, with Indian prices usually landing closer to ₹5,000–₹6,000.
Rockstar’s Former Tech Director Clears the Air
Adding some much-needed clarity, Obbe Vermeij, former technical director at Rockstar North, publicly dismissed the $100 price speculation.
According to him, Rockstar Games has never hinted at a $100 launch price. He pointed out that the rumour is largely an internet creation rather than something backed by the studio itself.
More importantly, Vermeij explained Rockstar’s long-term thinking. GTA 6 is expected to have a major online component, much like GTA Online, and for that to succeed, Rockstar will want the largest possible player base, not a smaller audience locked out by a steep upfront price.
Expected GTA 6 Price in India
Based on current industry standards and Vermeij’s comments, GTA 6 is likely to follow the regular AAA pricing model.
What that means for India:
- Standard Edition price could land around ₹5,499 to ₹5,999
- Special or Ultimate Editions (if launched) may cost more, depending on bundled content
In short, an ₹8,000 price tag for the base game now seems highly unlikely.
