Gujarat University attack: A mob broke into the Gujarat University hostel in Ahmedabad on Saturday. They attacked international students who were giving namaz there.
According to Gujarat University vice-chancellor Neerja Gupta, namaz could not have been the only cause of violence against international student. She adds it could have been caused by foriegn students’ lack of understanding of local culture.
The vice-chancellor alleged that international students eat non-vegetarian food and that discarding leftovers can be a problem in Gujarat’s vegetarian community. She stressed the importance of educating international students about local customs and culture during her speech.
All about the Gujarat University Attack
On Saturday, a gang of people invaded the Gujarat University hostel in Ahmedabad and allegedly attacked international students who were performing namaz inside the building. Five people were injured during the violence. Following the attack, one student from Sri Lanka and another from Tajikistan were hospitalized.
A student is seen striking someone who is protesting about namaz being offered on university property. The video of the same has become popular on social media.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Police have arrested numerous people for their involvement in the incident. A first information report (FIR) has been filed against approximately 25 unnamed individuals for rioting, unlawful assembly, voluntarily inflicting harm, property damage, and criminal trespass.
The event has sparked considerable criticism from many quarters. Opposition parties have criticized the present BJP government’s management of law and order in the state.
The event was also reported to the Ministry of External Affairs. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, stated in a post on X (previously Twitter) that the Gujarat government will take severe action against those responsible.
