    Holi 2026 Date and Time
In 2026, Holi will be celebrated over two days, as per traditional customs followed in most parts of India.

Holika Dahan, also known as Chhoti Holi or Jalawali Holi, will take place on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Rangwali Holi, the main day of colour celebrations, will be observed on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

According to the Hindu calendar and Drik Panchang:
Purnima Tithi begins: March 2, 2026, at 5:55 PM
Purnima Tithi ends: March 3, 2026, at 5:07 PM
    Holika Dahan: March 3, 2026
    Rangwali Holi: March 4, 2026

Holika Dahan rituals are performed after sunset during the auspicious evening muhurat on the full moon night of Phalguna month.

    Why Holika Dahan is Celebrated
Holika Dahan holds deep mythological and spiritual importance. It is rooted in the legend of demon king Hiranyakashyap and his son Prahlad, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu.

According to mythology, Hiranyakashyap tried to kill Prahlad for refusing to worship him. He enlisted his sister Holika, who had a boon to remain unharmed by fire. She sat with Prahlad in a burning pyre to destroy him. However, due to Prahlad’s unwavering devotion, he emerged unharmed while Holika was consumed by the flames.

The ritual bonfire lit on Holika Dahan symbolises the triumph of faith, devotion, and righteousness over evil and arrogance. Devotees gather around the fire, offer prayers, and seek protection from negativity.

Rangwali Holi: The Festival of Colours
The next day, Rangwali Holi or Dhulandi is celebrated with colours, music, sweets, and festive gatherings. People apply gulaal, splash coloured water, and share traditional delicacies like gujiya and thandai.

The day also celebrates the divine love of Radha and Krishna. In regions like Mathura and Vrindavan, Holi festivities often begin days in advance with cultural performances and temple rituals, drawing visitors from across the country.

Beyond religious significance, Holi marks the arrival of spring and the end of winter. It is seen as a time to let go of past grievances, strengthen relationships, and welcome positivity.

    Cultural and Social Importance
Holi is more than just a religious festival. It brings communities together, breaking social barriers as people celebrate regardless of age or background. From traditional village celebrations to modern city parties, the festival continues to evolve while retaining its core spirit.

As Holi 2026 approaches, markets across India are already buzzing with colours, pichkaris, sweets, and festive decorations. With the festival falling in early March this year, schools and offices are also preparing for holiday celebrations and events.
