Theme of Human Rights Day 2023

“Freedom, Equality, and Justice for All” is the theme of Human Rights Day 2023. Human rights have grown more generally recognized and safeguarded across the world in the decades after the UDHR was ratified. The declaration has served as the foundation for a human rights protection system that is expanding and reaching out to more vulnerable groups such as migrants, indigenous peoples, and people with disabilities.

Human Rights Day in History

On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which became known as Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day was formally created in 1950, when the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 423(V), which called on all states and interested organizations to celebrate December 10 as Human Rights Day. The commemorative Human Rights Day stamp produced by the United Nations Postal Administration in 1952 was pre-ordered by around 200,000 individuals, showing the day’s popularity.

Although not legally enforceable, the Declaration of Human Rights, with its comprehensive enumeration of political, civil, economic, social, and cultural rights, inspired the formation of more than 60 human rights instruments, which collectively established the global standard for human rights. Today’s unanimous agreement among all United Nations Member States on the Declaration’s fundamental human rights strengthens it and emphasizes the importance of human rights in our daily lives.

The importance of Human Rights Day

The Day serves as a compelling reminder of the fundamental rights and liberties that every individual, regardless of background, possesses, and it emphasizes the communal obligation to defend and protect these rights. It is a rallying cry, calling governments, organizations, and individuals to promote equality, justice, and dignity for all, as well as to establish a society in which human rights are universally acknowledged, defended, and cherished.
