India has officially stepped into the future of travel documents with the launch of the e-Passport, a smarter and more secure version of the traditional passport. Introduced by the Government of India, the new e-Passport uses embedded chip technology to tighten security, reduce fraud, and make international travel smoother for Indian citizens.
At first glance, it looks just like the familiar blue passport. But inside, it carries advanced digital features designed to meet global travel standards.
What Exactly Is an e-Passport?
An e-Passport is a regular passport with a small electronic chip embedded in its back cover. This chip securely stores encrypted personal and biometric details, including your photograph, fingerprints, and facial recognition data.

The technology follows international aviation and travel security norms, making it extremely difficult to clone or tamper with. For travellers, this means quicker identity verification and fewer hassles at immigration counters abroad.
Who Can Apply for an e-Passport?
Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport can apply for an e-Passport. This includes:
- First-time passport applicants
- Individuals renewing an existing passport
For now, e-Passports are being issued at selected Passport Seva Kendras and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs). Applicants are advised to check availability at their nearest centre before booking an appointment.
How to Apply: Step-by-Step
The application process remains familiar and simple:
- Register or log in on the official Passport Seva portal
- Fill out the application form for a new passport or renewal
- Pay the applicable fee and book an appointment
- Visit the PSK/POPSK for document verification and biometric capture
- Once approved, the e-Passport is delivered to your registered address
No extra steps, no complicated paperwork.
Application Fees
The pricing remains the same as regular passports:
- ₹1,500 for a 36-page passport booklet
- ₹2,000 for a 60-page passport booklet
Additional charges apply for Tatkal or expedited services, just like before.
Why the e-Passport Matters
The rollout brings clear advantages for Indian travellers:
- Stronger security: Encrypted chip data makes forgery and identity theft far more difficult
- Faster immigration: Automated e-gates can scan biometric details quickly
- Global acceptance: Fully aligned with international travel and aviation standards
Beyond convenience, the move signals India’s push toward more secure, tech-driven governance in line with global best practices.

As rollout expands to more centres, the e-Passport is expected to become the new normal for Indian travellers.
