With rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East disrupting major flight routes, the BCCI has reportedly pushed the tournament’s start date to March 28, 2026, while preparing contingency plans to ensure international players can travel safely to India.
The travel disruption, caused by escalating military tensions involving the U.S., Israel and Iran, has affected key aviation corridors used by international cricketers and broadcast teams. As a result, franchises and cricket boards are now reworking travel schedules just weeks before the season begins.
Gulf transit hubs disrupted
A large portion of IPL’s overseas talent traditionally travels via Gulf transit hubs such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. These airports serve as the main connection points for players flying in from Australia, England and South Africa.
However, with several airlines either suspending or rerouting flights through parts of the Middle East, securing smooth travel has become a logistical challenge. Teams are now looking at alternative routes through Europe and Southeast Asia to ensure players arrive on time.
Industry sources indicate that broadcast crews and support staff are also facing similar issues, adding pressure on organisers to finalise revised travel plans quickly.
Safety concerns among overseas stars
Beyond logistical hurdles, safety concerns are also playing a role. Some overseas players are reportedly cautious about flying through volatile airspace, especially with ongoing tensions impacting aviation advisories across parts of the Gulf region.
Cricket administrators are taking a “safety-first” approach, prioritising secure travel routes even if it means longer journeys. The ICC has already set up a dedicated Travel Support Desk to help players and staff reroute via safer corridors, mainly through Europe and Southeast Asia.
This comes at a time when the ICC is also overseeing the final stages of the T20 World Cup 2026 across India and Sri Lanka, making coordination between boards crucial.
BCCI revises IPL 2026 schedule
Amid the uncertainty, the BCCI has adjusted the tournament window. IPL 2026 is now expected to run from March 28 to May 31, allowing additional time to manage player arrivals and domestic logistical challenges.
The board is likely to release the schedule in two phases, a strategy used previously to deal with election-related security arrangements and venue availability. Assembly elections due in states such as West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Assam are also influencing venue planning and match scheduling.
Officials are closely monitoring travel advisories and may prioritise venues with strong direct international connectivity. Cities with better long-haul flight access could be preferred to avoid reliance on Middle East transit routes.

New rules for overseas players
IPL 2026 will also operate under updated player regulations aimed at maintaining stability in team compositions.
The BCCI has introduced a salary cap of ₹18 crore for overseas players in the mini-auction, ensuring parity with retained Indian stars and preventing inflated bidding wars. Additionally, stricter withdrawal rules are being enforced. Players who pull out after being picked in the auction without a valid medical reason could face a two-season ban from the league.
These measures are designed to discourage last-minute exits that disrupt team strategies and tournament planning.
