Mumbai Comedian Kunal Kamra Refuses to Apologize Over ‘Gaddar’ Remark
Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has made it clear that he has no regrets over his controversial ‘gaddar’ (traitor) remark, which was perceived as a reference to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Kamra has also stated that he will only apologize if directed by the courts, despite demands from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
- Kunal Kamra asserts he will not apologize unless a court orders him to do so.
- Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis criticized the comedian, calling it “low-level comedy.”
- Kamra denies receiving any payment from the opposition to target Eknath Shinde.
- His studio in Mumbai was vandalized by Shiv Sena workers and later demolished by civic authorities.
- The incident has sparked a major political controversy, with reactions from opposition leaders.
Kamra’s Firm Stance: “No Regrets, No Apology”
Speaking to Mumbai Police from Tamil Nadu, Kamra reaffirmed his position, stating he had no regrets about his remarks. He dismissed speculation that he was paid by the opposition to target Shinde, even offering authorities access to his financial records to prove no such transaction took place.
His comments have drawn sharp criticism from Maharashtra’s ruling BJP-Sena government. CM Devendra Fadnavis, addressing the state assembly, condemned Kamra’s remarks, arguing that “freedom of expression does not extend to disrespecting the Deputy CM.”
Shiv Sena Workers Vandalize Kamra’s Studio
Shortly after the controversy erupted, Kamra’s studio in Mumbai’s Khar area was attacked by workers loyal to Eknath Shinde’s faction of the Shiv Sena. Viral videos show the mob ransacking the studio, throwing chairs, and damaging property. The Mumbai Police arrested 11 individuals, all of whom were released on bail within hours.
Adding to the controversy, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) swiftly demolished the studio, citing “violations.” This move has raised concerns over the use of state machinery for political retribution.
Political Reactions: Opposition Slams State Government
Opposition leaders, particularly from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction, have strongly criticized the attack on Kamra and the demolition of his studio.
- Aaditya Thackeray, son of Uddhav Thackeray, called Eknath Shinde an “insecure coward.”
- Priyanka Chaturvedi, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, pointed out that Kamra never named Shinde directly, questioning the violent reaction.
- “If they are so hurt by a joke, it must contain some truth,” Chaturvedi remarked.
Free Speech vs. Political Power Struggles
This incident has once again brought the debate over free speech, political intolerance, and government overreach into focus. The comedy community and civil rights activists have condemned the vandalism, arguing that criticism—even if controversial—should be countered with dialogue, not violence.
What’s Next?
With multiple police complaints filed against Kamra and an FIR against the vandals, legal proceedings are likely to unfold in the coming weeks. Whether the courts intervene in Kamra’s refusal to apologize remains to be seen.
