Kunal Kemmu’s latest series Single Papa may be packaged as a light-hearted comedy-drama, but for the actor, parts of it struck a deeply personal chord. While playing a single man navigating unexpected parenthood, Kemmu found himself revisiting memories from his own life — moments that made some scenes far more emotional than scripted.
The series, which also stars Prajakta Kohli, Dayanand Shetty, Manoj Pahwa and Ayesha Raza, has been drawing attention for its warm storytelling and relatable take on modern parenting.
A script that pulled him in instantly
In a recent interaction, Kemmu revealed that the writing was the biggest reason he said yes to Single Papa. He described the script as engaging and emotionally balanced, making it hard to put down once he started reading.
He shared that unlike heavy dramas, the show’s screenplay flowed easily, mixing humour with quiet emotional beats. That combination, he felt, would translate naturally on screen and connect knowing that audiences could laugh and feel moved at the same time.
Fatherhood shaped his performance
While shooting the series, Kemmu realised how much his real-life experience as a father influenced his performance. Working with a child actor felt natural, something he credits to his own parenting journey.
Recalling his daughter Inaaya’s early months, Kemmu said those memories helped him approach certain scenes with more sensitivity. He admitted that some emotional moments came from real feelings rather than pure acting, allowing him to portray his character, Gaurav Gehlot, with greater honesty.
Drawing from real emotions on set
Kemmu explained that being a parent helped him stay calm and attentive while working with a young child on set. Those instincts, developed off-camera, quietly shaped his on-screen reactions and emotional depth.
The experience, he said, made him more confident in playing a character who is learning how to care, protect and connect — all while figuring things out as he goes.
Soha Ali Khan’s reaction to the series
The show also received a public thumbs-up from Kemmu’s wife, actor Soha Ali Khan. She recently shared her thoughts on social media, calling the series heartfelt and emotionally fulfilling. Her note praised the performances and the show’s ability to make viewers laugh and cry in the same breath.
