It looks like Kyle Larson will need a stand-in again this year — and if you’re a Justin Allgaier fan, you’re going to like this news.
Larson is pulling double duty again in 2025, attempting “The Double” by racing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on May 25. It’s a huge challenge — and one that means he’ll miss some NASCAR All-Star practice time due to his commitments in Indy.
So, who’s filling in for Larson?
According to FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass, Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chairman Jeff Gordon confirmed that a JR Motorsports driver will step in for Larson during any practice and qualifying sessions at North Wilkesboro Speedway. The driver also needs to “fit in his seat,” which is a not-so-subtle nod to… you guessed it — Justin Allgaier.
Allgaier isn’t new to this role. He filled in for Larson during Coca-Cola 600 qualifying in 2024, so he’s already proven he can handle the No. 5 car without a hitch.
What about Carl Edwards?
Interestingly, Larson actually tried to get Carl Edwards back behind the wheel — how cool would that have been? But Edwards reportedly turned down the opportunity. So instead, Hendrick is sticking with someone already in the system — and Allgaier is the safe, smart choice.

Will Larson miss the Coca-Cola 600?
Probably not. Unlike last year, Larson is fully committed to the Coca-Cola 600 if there’s any overlap. So even if things run late in Indy, don’t expect a sub in Charlotte. Larson will make every effort to be there.
Why This Matters
This isn’t just about who’s in the seat for practice — it shows how seriously Hendrick Motorsports and Kyle Larson are taking “The Double.” It’s a rare and ambitious feat, and it takes a full team effort to pull it off.
Stay tuned, because this story is far from over. And if Allgaier does get behind the wheel again, don’t be surprised if he makes the most of his All-Star moment.
