The controversy around Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman’s participation in the Indian Premier League has intensified, with religious leaders in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain openly threatening to disrupt IPL matches if the pacer is allowed to play in the 2026 season.
Mustafizur was recently signed by Kolkata Knight Riders at the IPL 2026 auction, a move that has sparked strong reactions amid growing anger in India over recent reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.

Ujjain seers issue warning over IPL matches
The sharpest reaction has come from Ujjain, where Mahavir Nath, chief priest of the Rinmukteshwar Mahadev Temple, said religious leaders would not hesitate to physically stop matches if Mustafizur takes the field.
According to reports, Nath warned that seers could enter stadiums, damage pitches and bring games to a halt. Similar statements have reportedly been made by other religious groups in the region, escalating concerns around security and public order if the issue is not addressed.
Protests grow amid Bangladesh violence outrage
The backlash follows widespread outrage in India after multiple incidents of alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, including reports of lynchings. The incidents have triggered protests in several cities.
In Kolkata, demonstrators gathered outside the Bangladesh High Commission, demanding action against those responsible and calling for a ban on Bangladeshi players in the IPL.
KKR under fire for ₹9.2 crore Mustafizur deal
KKR’s decision to sign Mustafizur for ₹9.2 crore has drawn criticism from sections of fans on social media. The left-arm pacer was picked after a bidding war with Chennai Super Kings, pushing his price sharply upward.
Mustafizur, who made his IPL debut in 2016, has played 60 matches in the league so far, picking up 65 wickets. He featured for Delhi Capitals in the previous season and remains one of Bangladesh’s most experienced T20 bowlers.

BCCI yet to respond
So far, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not issued any official statement on the controversy or the calls to bar Bangladeshi players from the league.
