In Los Angeles, United States, on Sunday, the 96th edition of the Academy Awards was held at Dolby Theatre. Cillian Murphy bagged his first Oscar award in the “Best Actor” category for his performance in the film directed by Christopher Nolan “Oppenheimer.” There were other candidates too for Oscars 2024.
Cillian Murphy First Oscar AwardÂ
Murphy came into the Academy Awards as a strong nominee. This was after picking up numerous Best Actor wins at the Golden Globes, BAFTA Film Awards and SAG Awards.
Cillian murphy was nominated for the first time, and won the BAFTA “Best Actor” for his stellar role as J. Robert for his performance in “Oppenheimer”. Further, he also won the Golden Globe award the “Best Male Actor Motion Picture Drama” category in January.
The story of the film tells how, on July 16, 1945, Oppenheimer and his peers at Los Alamos tested the atomic bomb without knowing what was going to happen. Murphy bested Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Bradley Cooper for Maestro and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction. The Irish actor thought that Nolan’s films had led to his regular presence in films for almost two decades and he had always been a supporting player. This time, director Nolan wanted him to lead.
Cillian Murphy speech During Oscars 2024
After winning the Oscar award on Sunday, Murphy said, “We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or worse, we’re now living in Oppenheimer’s world. So, I wouldn’t say I like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.
Cillian Murphy also thanked producer Emma Thomas, director Nolan, and the rest of the team behind the making of “Oppenheimer.” At the end of his speech, Murphy said he was a “very, very proud Irishman.”
Last year, Murphy once said he knew he was right for some movies, but for some, he was not. “I have always said privately and publicly to Chris that if I am available and you want me to be in a movie, I am there. I do not care about the size of the part,” he said. “But deep down, secretly, I was desperate to play a lead for him.”
