Pakistan cricket may be heading toward one of its biggest T20 resets in recent years. Batter Salman Ali Agha is likely to be removed as captain after the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, while senior names including Babar Azam could also face uncertain futures in the shortest format once the tournament ends.

PCB unhappy with team performance
According to PTI, citing a reliable source inside the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), chairman Mohsin Naqvi is unhappy with the team’s performance in the current ICC event. The board had high expectations this time after receiving assurances from selectors and team management that Pakistan would deliver a strong campaign.
However, results on the field have not lived up to those expectations. The source said Naqvi is now preparing for tough decisions and wants a detailed review of the team’s direction after the World Cup concludes.
Salman Agha set to lose captaincy
Regardless of how Pakistan finishes in the tournament, batter Salman Ali Agha is expected to be removed as T20 captain. The move is seen as part of a larger restructuring plan within the team.
Two players have already emerged as potential captaincy options. All-rounder Shadab Khan and pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi are reportedly being considered to take over leadership duties as Pakistan looks to rebuild its T20 unit.
The PCB is also expected to hold detailed discussions with head coach Mike Hesson and the selection panel once the World Cup campaign ends.
Babar Azam’s T20 future uncertain
Another major talking point is the future of star batter Babar Azam. A veteran of 145 T20 internationals, Babar has been one of Pakistan’s most dependable players over the last decade. But with the board planning a transition phase, his place in the T20 setup is now under serious review.
Sources indicate that Babar, along with Salman Agha, Usman Khan and a few other senior players, could be nearing the end of their T20 international journeys. Unless there is a dramatic turnaround in performances during the remaining matches, the PCB may look to move forward with a younger core.

Focus shifting to younger players
Head coach Mike Hesson had reportedly informed PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi even before the World Cup that Pakistan would need to start building for the future after the tournament. The focus is now expected to shift toward grooming younger players and adapting to the demands of modern-day T20 cricket.
Selectors and team management are likely to prioritise aggressive batting, flexible combinations and improved fielding standards as part of the rebuild.
Big reset likely after World Cup
Once Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign ends, major changes in leadership and squad composition are expected. The upcoming weeks could define the next phase of Pakistan’s T20 cricket as the board looks to move into a new era with fresh faces and a renewed approach.
