Royal Challengers Bengaluru head into IPL 2026 carrying something they’ve waited years to feel — the pressure of being defending champions. After finally lifting their maiden IPL trophy last season, RCB have largely backed the same core, opting for stability over big changes at the mini auction held in Abu Dhabi.
The franchise retained 17 players and entered the auction with a relatively modest purse of ₹16.40 crore. With limited funds and a settled XI, RCB’s strategy was clear: protect the winning combination and plug only essential gaps.
RCB’s Auction Strategy: Back the Core, Minimal Tweaks
RCB freed up funds by releasing a few notable names, including England all-rounder Liam Livingstone and South Africa pacer Lungi Ngidi. Domestic players Manoj Bhandage, Mayank Agarwal, Mohit Rathee and Sachin Baby were also let go ahead of the auction.

Despite having the fourth-lowest purse — ahead of only Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals — RCB stayed calm at the table. The management chose not to disrupt a squad that dominated last season, prioritising continuity over experimentation.
Fast Bowling Depth Remains a Talking Point
While RCB’s batting and all-round depth look solid on paper, the fast-bowling department could be a concern. Josh Hazlewood is currently dealing with injury and workload management issues, while Yash Dayal hasn’t featured in competitive cricket since the last IPL.
That puts added responsibility on Indian quicks and all-rounders to step up if injuries persist through the season.

The Challenge Ahead: Defending the Crown
Winning the IPL once is tough. Defending it is even tougher. RCB now face a season where every team will target them as the benchmark side. With a settled leadership group, experienced internationals, and a confident Indian core, the ingredients are there.
How well they manage fitness, especially among their pacers, could ultimately decide whether Bengaluru can pull off something special again in IPL 2026.
