Netflix opens the door to the past
Netflix has officially released the first five minutes of Stranger Things Season 5, and it’s sending fans straight back to where the nightmare began — Will Byers’ disappearance in 1983.
The teaser opens inside the Upside Down, with young Will (played by Noah Schnapp) hiding out in the shadowy remains of Castle Byers. It’s dark, damp, and heartbreakingly quiet — just Will, scared and alone, softly singing Should I Stay or Should I Go.
That song, which his brother Jonathan introduced him to in Season 1, becomes more than just a tune — it’s his lifeline, a reminder of home amid the monsters.
“The Crawl” takes fans back to Hawkins, 1983
According to Netflix’s Tudum, the episode is titled “The Crawl”, set six days after Will’s disappearance on November 12, 1983. Things take a turn when eerie sounds echo outside Castle Byers.
Suddenly, a Demogorgon bursts through, and Will grabs a hunting rifle — a nostalgic nod for longtime fans — but it’s no use. He’s dragged deep into the darkness, toward Vecna’s lair.
The next scene shifts to the Hawkins library, twisted into its Upside Down version. Vecna appears, holding Will captive, and utters, “At long last, we can begin.” The scene ends with Will screaming as Vecna’s vines crawl into his mouth — a haunting image that firmly links Season 5’s story to the show’s earliest mysteries.

Vecna was always there
The biggest revelation? Vecna’s connection to Will’s original disappearance.
What once seemed like a random abduction by a Demogorgon now appears to have been orchestrated — or at least influenced — by Vecna from day one.
This recontextualizes the entire series and sets up Season 5 as a full-circle return to the emotional and supernatural roots of Stranger Things.
Netflix teases the final battle
Netflix’s official synopsis says:
“As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming, and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.”
So yes, it’s not just a nostalgia trip — it’s the beginning of the end.
