The Chandra Surface Thermophysical Experiment, or ChaSTE, a lander module equipment, has detected a significant reduction in temperature in the lunar topsoil.
The temperature on the lunar surface declines significantly with depth, at least near the south pole, according to the preliminary results of Chandrayaan-3 tests.
The Chandra Surface Thermophysical Experiment, or ChaSTE, a lander module equipment, has detected a significant reduction in temperature in the lunar topsoil. According to ISRO, the temperature plunged to roughly -10 degrees Celsius just 10 cm below the surface, while it was around 45 degrees Celsius on the surface.
One of the goals of the Chandrayaan-3 investigations was to create a temperature profile of the lunar topsoil. According to ISRO, the ChaSTE instrument contains a temperature probe with a programmed penetration mechanism capable of reaching a depth of 10 cm beneath the surface. The probe is outfitted with 10 separate temperature sensors.
ISRO’s results create the first temperature profile of the lunar south pole. ISRO stated that more research was being conducted.

Chandrayaan-3’s lander module has four instruments, while the rover carries two. One instrument is also installed aboard the propulsion module, which is in orbit around the moon.
