Upcoming Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 4×4 for India: Mini Fortuner’s Key Details Revealed

Toyota may be getting ready to add a new, rugged nameplate to its India line-up — and this one could hit the sweet spot for off-road fans. The upcoming Land Cruiser FJ, often dubbed the “Mini Fortuner”, is expected to sit below the Fortuner while still carrying the tough, no-nonsense DNA that the Land Cruiser badge is known for.

While there’s no official India confirmation yet, the timing feels right. Demand for lifestyle SUVs is growing steadily, and Toyota has already outlined plans to introduce around 15 new models globally by 2030. The Land Cruiser FJ could well be part of that broader push.

A smaller Land Cruiser, not a softer one

Unveiled globally at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, the Land Cruiser FJ is designed to be more accessible without losing its off-road credibility. Toyota has drawn clear inspiration from the iconic FJ40, giving the SUV a boxy, upright stance that instantly signals its purpose.

Unlike many compact SUVs that focus on styling, the FJ stays true to old-school engineering. It uses the IMV ladder-frame chassis — the same architecture that underpins the Toyota Fortuner and Toyota Hilux. For Indian conditions, this body-on-frame setup is a big plus, promising durability on rough roads and trails.

    Engine and drivetrain expectations

Under the hood, the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to rely on Toyota’s familiar 2.7-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. Known internally as the 2TR-FE, the motor is likely to produce around 163 PS and 246 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed Super ECT automatic gearbox.

A proper 4×4 system will be central to the package, reinforcing its positioning as a serious off-roader rather than a soft-roader with SUV looks.

    Compact size, practical proportions

By Land Cruiser standards, the FJ is relatively compact. It measures about 4,575 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width and 1,960 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,580 mm. That makes it noticeably shorter than the larger Land Cruiser 250, translating into a tighter turning radius of roughly 5.5 metres.

These dimensions should work well in India — manageable in city traffic while still capable on narrow trails and broken rural roads.

    Design focused on function

The Land Cruiser FJ’s design is refreshingly honest. Squared-off panels, circular headlamp elements and chunky cladding give it a rugged, utilitarian vibe. Practical touches like removable bumper sections, exposed mounting points and support for external accessories underline its off-road intent.

Inside, the cabin is expected to prioritise durability and ease of use over plush luxury. Think hard-wearing materials, straightforward controls and a layout built for adventure rather than show.

India launch: Likely, but not confirmed

Toyota hasn’t shared India-specific plans yet, but the signs are encouraging. Positioned below the Fortuner, the Land Cruiser FJ could appeal to buyers who want genuine 4×4 capability in a slightly more compact and potentially more attainable package.

If Toyota decides to bring it here within the next couple of years, the Land Cruiser FJ could carve out a unique space in India’s fast-evolving SUV market — one where authenticity still matters.
