Amid growing concerns over stricter scrutiny of US tourist visas in India, a man’s Reddit post about his B1/B2 visa being approved in barely two minutes at the Chennai consulate has caught widespread attention. His experience comes at a time when several applicants report rejections as consular officers tighten checks to curb visa misuse and overstays.
Tourist visas under sharper scrutiny
The B1/B2 visa, meant for business and tourism, has increasingly come under focus as authorities remain cautious about applicants using visitor visas as a pathway to overstay in the US or seek asylum later. This has led to shorter interviews, pointed questions, and quicker decisions at US consular offices across India.

‘Show strong ties to India — without saying it’
In his Reddit post, the applicant explained that he never directly stated he would return to India, but structured his answers to clearly reflect deep roots back home. According to him, the key was making the visa officer comfortable about his intent without sounding rehearsed or defensive.
Detailed travel plan made the difference
When asked about the purpose of travel, the man said he gave a clear, detailed itinerary instead of a vague one-line response. His plan included visiting New York and Washington DC, touring NASA’s Space Center in Houston, and attending a FIFA World Cup match.
He advised that there is no reason to keep answers overly short if the travel plan is genuine and transparent.
Questions on family, travel history, and work
The visa officer also asked why he was travelling alone and not with his wife. He responded that she had work commitments in India.
He was then asked about prior international travel, where he listed countries such as Portugal, Dubai, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia — something that likely helped establish his travel credibility.
Work details were also discussed. The man mentioned his company and salary, stating he earns around ₹50 lakh per annum. He added that his stable job, strong income, and marital status together reinforced the fact that he had solid reasons to return to India after the trip.
No documents asked, intent mattered most
Interestingly, the applicant said the visa officer only asked for his passport. He was not asked to show bank statements, hotel bookings, flight tickets, or even proof of FIFA match reservations.
According to him, it wasn’t about paperwork but about clearly communicating intent and consistency in answers.

A takeaway for applicants
While every visa interview is different, the post highlights a recurring theme: strong ties to India, a believable travel plan, and honest answers can still work in an environment of heightened scrutiny. The Chennai approval shows that despite tougher checks, genuine tourist applications continue to get through.
