If your X timeline refused to load or posts simply vanished today, you weren’t alone. The social media platform formerly known as Twitter suffered a widespread outage on Friday, leaving thousands of users across the US unable to access feeds, replies, or even log in properly.
According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, more than 45,000 users reported problems with X at the peak of the disruption. Many said their timelines were blank, posts wouldn’t refresh, and engagement tools failed to load.
What happened to X today?
The outage appeared sudden. Several users reported that X was working normally before slowing down dramatically and eventually becoming inaccessible. The issue affected both mobile apps and the web version.

Even xAI’s chatbot Grok was down during the outage, adding to the confusion around the scale of the problem.
As of writing, the X, owned by Elon Musk, has not released an official statement explaining the cause or offering a restoration timeline.
Cloudflare error adds to the trouble
Several users encountered error messages linked to Cloudflare while trying to access X.
The message read:
“Cloudflare protects this website. But something went wrong trying to reach it… it’s most likely an issue with the web server you were trying to reach.”
This suggests the outage may be related to server-side or infrastructure issues rather than individual user accounts or devices.
Social media reacts
As expected, users flocked to Downdetector’s comment section to vent and compare notes.
“Is the website going veryyy slow for anyone else or is it just my poor connection?” one user asked.
Another wrote, “𝕏 is down. It was working until 15 minutes ago. Tried both mobile and web — both have issues.”
A third comment pointed out that this was the second major disruption in a week, following a global blackout earlier.
X down: What you can try right now
If X is still not working for you, here are a few simple steps worth trying:
• Check X’s official support account or Downdetector to confirm it’s a widespread issue
• Refresh the app or log out and log back in
• Clear browser cache or try a different browser or device
• Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
• Wait it out — major outages usually need backend fixes

If none of these work, it’s likely a platform-side issue and will resolve only after X restores its systems.
The bigger picture
Frequent outages have raised concerns among users and advertisers alike, especially as X continues to undergo backend changes and cost restructuring. With no official word yet, users are left waiting — and refreshing — for normal service to return.
