Zomato pure veg controversy: Zomato’s recent announcement of a ‘100% veg’ food delivery fleet with green uniforms drew criticism on social media. CEO Deepinder Goyal said Zomato’s senior executives gathered in a Zoom conversation that lasted more than 20 hours. This was to find a way out of the major controversy over the business’s launch of a ‘100% veg’ fleet.
What’s the reason behind the Zomato pure veg controversy?
Zomato’s ‘pure veg’ fleet project will see the food delivery app engage with restaurants that exclusively serve vegetarian cuisine. Further, delivery partners will only handle vegetarian food packages. Zomato has developed a green uniform for delivery partners in the ‘pure veg’ fleet.
However, a considerable debate emerged on social media about the move, with individuals pointing out several issues. At the same time, some saw it as a “modern-day casteism. However, others argued that a separate uniform for vegetarian food orders could cause problems for people ordering non-vegetarian foods in various ways.
The delivery partners in red uniforms may be prevented from entering vegetarian-preferred societies and residential complexes. Apart, there may occur issues between vegetarian landlords and non-vegetarian renters.
CEO Deepinder Goyal, addressing the NDTV Indian Of The Year awards on Saturday, stated that he and his staff responded quickly and abandoned the separate uniform concept.
How the the ‘Pure Veg’ Fleet came up?
“We conducted a massive study entitled ‘What will make your order from Zomato more.’ “And this came up,” Deepinder Goyal told NDTV.
In previous social media posts, the Zomato CEO emphasized that the ‘pure veg’ service strictly caters to dietary preferences, regardless of religion or caste.
He adds, “Please note that this Pure Veg Mode or the Pure Veg Fleet doesn’t serve or alienate any religious or political preference.”
