Nayanthara’s 2023 film Annapoorani is finally making a comeback to OTT. The movie, which was removed from Netflix earlier this year following controversy, will now stream on JioHotstar starting October 1.

There’s a twist though — reports suggest the film won’t be available in Tamil this time. Instead, viewers will get to watch it in Hindi.

What’s the Story of Annapoorani?

The film, directed by Nilesh Krishnaa, follows Annapoorani (Nayanthara), a young woman from Srirangam who dreams of becoming a chef. But her journey is complicated, since pursuing her dream requires her to cook non-vegetarian food, which clashes with her family’s religious beliefs.

Things get even more intense when her bond with Farhaan (played by Jai) is portrayed, leading to accusations that the movie promotes “love jihad.”

Why Was Annapoorani Removed Earlier?

The controversy started with two key scenes:

  • One where Annapoorani is seen talking about a God eating meat.
  • Another where she’s shown offering prayers of another faith during a cooking competition.

These sparked strong backlash from certain groups, and the Hindu Seva Parishad even filed an FIR in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Following the outrage, Zee Studios issued a public apology to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Nayanthara herself later shared a heartfelt note, saying she never intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

Star Cast and Milestone

Apart from Nayanthara, Annapoorani features an impressive cast including Achyuth Kumar, KS Ravikumar, Sathyaraj, Jai, Redin Kingsley, and Karthik Kumar.

This film also carries special significance — it marks Nayanthara’s 75th film, a milestone in her career.

Final Take

Despite all the drama, Annapoorani is making its way back to viewers. Whether it will win hearts this time or spark fresh debate remains to be seen.

If you missed it during its short run on Netflix, you now have another chance. Mark your calendars — October 1 on JioHotstar
