25 OTT Platforms Including Ullu and ALTT Banned in India for Obscene Content: Full List Here

The Indian government has just slammed the brakes on 25 OTT apps and websites—including some big names like Ullu, ALTT, and Desiflix—citing concerns over obscene and, at times, outright pornographic content. If you’ve tried to open these platforms lately and gotten nowhere, you’re not the only one. Internet Service Providers across India have received a strict order to block these sites and apps completely as of July 23.

Why Did This Happen?

Lately, OTT platforms in India have found themselves under a serious microscope, especially when it comes to content that crosses the line from risqué to outright inappropriate. Multiple ministries—including Information and Broadcasting, Home Affairs, Electronics and IT—as well as legal and industry experts, came together to take this latest action.

The Ministry said these platforms were repeatedly found guilty of streaming vulgar and sexually explicit material, with little or no storyline, and plenty of “family relationship” red flags. To put it mildly: a government source called a lot of this content “obscene and vulgar,” with barely any redeeming social message.

Not the First Time for Ullu and ALTT

Ullu and ALTT aren’t new to controversy. In July and August 2024, the National Commission on Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) flagged both for streaming over-the-top explicit content. In fact, Ullu even had to remove a web series called House Arrest back in May 2025 after government intervention. But that wasn’t enough: platforms have sometimes pulled content only to bring back unedited versions later, which did not go unnoticed.

Who Runs These Platforms?

  • ALTT: A subsidiary of Balaji Telefilms, with producers Ektaa Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor behind the scenes.
  • ULLU: Founded by media entrepreneur Vibhu Agarwal.

What Laws Did They Violate?

According to officials, these OTT apps broke several laws:

  • Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000
  • Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code
  • Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986
  • Section 67A of the IT Act (for sexually explicit content)

Government’s Final Warning

This crackdown isn’t out of the blue. In September 2024, all 25 platforms received a stern warning about their content, but most kept publishing the same kind of material. Even after an advisory went out in February 2025 urging platforms to stick to India’s IT Rules and obscenity laws, a handful tried using new domains to skirt the ban. Safe to say, the patience ran out.

What’s Next for Streaming in India?

With these bans in place, the government is sending a clear message: OTT platforms need to clean up their content or face the consequences. Whether this triggers a whole new wave of censorship or encourages better quality control across the board remains to be seen. For now, if your favorite OTT app just disappeared, now you know why.
