Germany statement on Kejriwal detention in Liquor Policy Case
During a press conference, journalists asked the German foreign ministry about Berlin’s view on the detention of the Delhi Chief Minister before the Lok Sabha elections. Answering the query, the spokeswoman stated that Germany had taken note of the situation.
“We’ve taken note; India is a democratic country. We assume and expect that the criteria governing judicial independence and basic democratic principles will be applied in this case. Mr Kejriwal, like anyone facing accusations, has the right to a fair and impartial trial. This includes the ability to pursue all available legal routes without restriction.
“The presumption of innocence is an essential component of the rule of law, and it must apply to him,” he said.
What India says to statement made by Germany on Arvind Kejriwal?
India stated that the remarks “undermined the independence of the judiciary” and constituted “blatant interference in India’s internal affairs.” The Ministry of External Affairs summoned German envoy George Enzweiler to issue an official objection.
MEA, after the meetings, says, “We see such remarks as interfering in our judicial process and undermining the independence of our judiciary.”India has a thriving and robust democracy with the rule of law. As with all legal disputes in the country and throughout the democratic world, the law will take its course in this instance. Biased conclusions made on this account are entirely unjustified.”
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has accused the Aam Aadmi Party head of being the “main conspirator” of the now-defunct Delhi liquor policy. ED adds that the Kejriwal government allegedly established it to obtain bribes from retailers and wholesalers. Mr Kejriwal was called upon by the investigating agency nine times before his detention. He’s currently in ED custody.
