According to the Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology, a low-pressure system is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal around February 15. That development has pushed the rain probability in the Khettarama area to nearly 70% on Sunday evening — right around match time.

    Low-Pressure System Raises Concern

In an official update, the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre flagged the possibility of unsettled weather conditions coinciding with the game.
“A low-pressure area is likely to form over the south-eastern Bay of Bengal around 15th February,” the department said in its advisory.

Weather platform AccuWeather, however, has projected cloudy conditions in Colombo with a 13% chance of rain during the evening. The difference in forecasts has only added to the uncertainty.

For fans who have travelled across borders — and paid steep airfares and hotel prices — the weather update has understandably triggered anxiety.

    Venue Equipped to Handle Rain

There is some relief, though. The R. Premadasa Stadium is among the few international venues equipped with full-ground covers. Officials say play can resume within 20 minutes once the rain stops, provided conditions improve quickly.

That means even if showers interrupt proceedings, a result is still possible — depending on how persistent the rain turns out to be.

    Political Tensions, Then a Breakthrough

The cricketing contest itself carries more than just sporting significance. After weeks of political tension and uncertainty, Pakistan agreed to face India in Colombo, reversing its earlier boycott stance.

The breakthrough reportedly came after discussions involving the International Cricket Council, along with cricket boards from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. For South Asian cricket fans, it felt like a temporary truce — a “peace season” of sorts — just in time for the biggest rivalry in world cricket.

The controversy had escalated after Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released from the Kolkata Knight Riders roster, reportedly under directions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The episode snowballed into a cross-border debate before eventually cooling off.

On the Field: India Banking on Middle Order

From a cricketing standpoint, India will look to rely on middle-order stability and the fitness of young opener Abhishek Sharma. Pakistan, on the other hand, will aim to capitalise on early breakthroughs if conditions favour swing under cloudy skies.

This match isn’t just another group-stage fixture. It draws millions of viewers across continents and generates massive broadcast revenue. The rivalry has always been emotional, dramatic, and fiercely competitive.

Now, the only question left is whether the weather will allow it to unfold fully.

For now, fans wait — checking both team sheets and weather apps — hoping the rain clouds stay away long enough for cricket to take centre stage.
