After years of complaints about bots, fake IDs, and agents grabbing all the Tatkal tickets within seconds, Indian Railways is stepping up with a digital overhaul that’s set to make things smoother and fairer for everyday passengers. Here’s everything you need to know about the big changes coming your way.

Aadhaar Is Now Your Ticket

Starting later this month, Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for all Tatkal bookings on IRCTC. If your IRCTC account is linked with Aadhaar, you’ll get a head start: priority access during the first 10 minutes of Tatkal ticket sales.

What about those who don’t verify? Well, they’ll have to wait three days after registering on IRCTC before booking Tatkal, Premium Tatkal, or even Opening ARP tickets.

Even agents—yes, the ones who usually grab all the seats—will be locked out during that early-access window. It’s a bold move aimed at keeping things fair for regular users.

Bots Are Being Kicked Out

The Railways Ministry isn’t just stopping at Aadhaar. They’ve gone full throttle with tech upgrades too. A new anti-bot system and a top-tier Content Delivery Network (CDN) are now in place to block automated logins and speed up the IRCTC website.

And it’s working. On May 22, 31,814 Tatkal tickets were booked in a single minute—a new record. Meanwhile, 2.5 crore suspicious user IDs have been deactivated, and AI is keeping an eye out for more shady activity.

Booking Is Getting Easier

These changes are already making a difference. In FY 2024-25:

  • Daily logins went up by 20%
  • Daily bookings increased by 11.85%
  • 86% of reserved tickets are now booked online

With 87% of IRCTC’s content now served via CDN, page load times are faster, the system’s more stable, and fewer users are getting kicked off during peak hours.

Counter Bookings May Also Need Aadhaar

Even offline ticket counters could soon follow suit. Officials say Aadhaar checks might become mandatory there too, ensuring everyone—whether booking online or at the station—plays by the same rules.

Pro Tip: Link Your Aadhaar Now

If you’re a regular train traveller, now’s the time to link your Aadhaar with IRCTC. It’s free, easy, and gives you a serious edge when booking those high-demand last-minute tickets.

Also, if you notice something fishy, you can report it via the Cyber Crime Portal. Indian Railways is putting a stronger emphasis on safety and fairness for all users.

Bottom line?
Tatkal ticketing is finally becoming less of a gamble and more of a fair shot. So update your IRCTC profile, get your Aadhaar linked, and get ready for a faster, smoother, and bot-free booking experience.
