The Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) is set to revolutionize umpiring by implementing Hawk-Eye technology to assess wide balls outside the off-stump and those above the batter’s head. This decision, aimed at eliminating subjectivity in umpiring, was announced during a pre-season meeting in Mumbai ahead of the tournament’s kickoff on March 22.
How Will Hawk-Eye Improve Wide Ball Decisions?
The technology, already used in IPL 2024 to judge over-the-waist no-balls, will now track wide deliveries with pinpoint accuracy. Here’s how it works:
- Automated Ball Tracking: Hawk-Eye measures the ball’s height as it passes the batter at the popping crease.
- Batter’s Head Height Database: Each player’s head height in an upright stance is stored for accurate comparisons.
- Dynamic Wide Guideline: The traditional blue wide guideline will shift based on the batter’s movement, ensuring fair calls.
This enhancement removes human error and ensures consistency in wide ball decisions, improving the game’s integrity.
