With less than a month to go for the start of IPL 2026, fans are still waiting for the official match schedule. The tournament is set to begin on March 28, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet released the full fixture list — triggering speculation about a possible postponement.
Now, the BCCI has addressed the delay.

Why Has the IPL 2026 Schedule Not Been Announced?
The delay has largely been linked to upcoming state elections in parts of India. Several host states, including Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, are expected to go to polls around the same time.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that the board is coordinating with election authorities before locking in the schedule.
“Please wait for two to three days for the IPL schedule. We will release it as soon as possible. We know it is getting late because elections are being held in three or four states,” Saikia told The Times of India.
He added that the board is awaiting confirmation from the authorities and will take a final call shortly.
In short — IPL 2026 is not postponed. It’s a scheduling adjustment due to administrative clearances.
IPL 2026 Dates Confirmed
As of now, the tournament is slated to run from March 28 to May 31.
A total of 10 teams will compete in 84 matches, including three knockout fixtures and the final. Once the ICC T20 World Cup concludes, the focus will shift directly to the IPL, keeping the T20 fever alive for fans across the country.
Will RCB Open the Season?
All eyes are on defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who lifted their maiden IPL trophy last season. As per IPL tradition, the previous finalists often feature in the opening match.
If that pattern continues, RCB could headline the season opener.
Under captain Rajat Patidar, the Bengaluru side looks largely settled. However, the possible absence of Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood could be a concern if he does not regain full fitness in time.
Stadium Uncertainty Adds to Delay
Apart from elections, venue approvals are also under review.
Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur
The home ground of Rajasthan Royals, Sawai Mansingh Stadium, has reportedly received an unsatisfactory rating from the BCCI. As a result, the franchise is exploring alternative venues, including the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
Meanwhile, RCB’s home venue, M Chinnaswamy Stadium, is also under scrutiny. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is yet to complete certain compliance requirements needed for hosting high-attendance games.
While RCB have hinted that they prefer to play at their traditional home ground, final approvals are still awaited.
What Happens Next?
The BCCI is expected to announce the full IPL 2026 schedule within the next few days. Once election dates and security arrangements are finalized, ticket sales are likely to go live immediately.
For now, there is no official word on postponement. The delay appears procedural rather than structural.
Fans can breathe easy — IPL 2026 is very much on track.
