Just days before IPL 2026 kicks off, a major ticket black-marketing racket has been exposed in Mumbai, raising fresh concerns over illegal ticket sales in big cricket events. The Mumbai Police have arrested a former Under-19 cricketer who was allegedly at the centre of a network selling “free passes” at inflated prices.
What exactly happened?
The case is linked to the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final between India and England, held on March 5 at Wankhede Stadium. According to police, tickets meant for complimentary distribution were illegally diverted and sold in the black market.

At the centre of the investigation is 26-year-old Balwant Singh Sodha, a former Mumbai U-19 player who is now involved in coaching. Police say he played a key role in sourcing and distributing these tickets through a wider network.
Tickets sold for up to ₹35,000
What’s shocking is the pricing. Tickets for the high-profile semi-final were reportedly sold between ₹25,000 and ₹35,000—far above their original value.
So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the case. The list includes a college sports teacher, a non-teaching staff member, and other associates. Investigators believe this wasn’t a one-off deal but part of a well-organised racket.
Were MCA passes misused?
Initial findings suggest that the tickets may have been complimentary passes issued by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) or affiliated clubs. These passes, meant for members and guests, were allegedly misused and diverted into the black market.
If confirmed, it points to serious loopholes in how such passes are handled and tracked.
Social media played a role
The racket didn’t just operate offline. Police found that several deals were closed via social media platforms, making the network more efficient and harder to track.
This digital angle has added another layer to the investigation, as authorities now look into online channels used for the transactions.

Accused in police custody
Balwant Singh Sodha was produced in court on Thursday and has been remanded to police custody. The DB Marg Police Station is currently leading the investigation, with efforts underway to identify more people involved in the network.
Security tightened ahead of IPL 2026
With IPL 2026 starting on March 28, authorities are not taking any chances. The opening match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will see heightened security.
Bengaluru Police have warned fans against entering the stadium without valid tickets. Strict checks, crowd control measures, and surveillance will be in place. Preparations include mock drills, traffic management plans, and coordination across departments.
What fans should keep in mind
Police have urged fans to buy tickets only from official platforms and avoid deals that sound too good to be true—especially “free pass” offers.
This case is a reminder that ticket black marketing is still a serious issue around major sporting events, and fans need to stay alert.
