India’s telecom scene just got a fresh update, and as usual, it’s a mixed bag. While Jio keeps flexing its muscles with massive subscriber gains, BSNL and Vi are still stuck in a downward spiral. Here’s the lowdown on what went down in April.
Jio’s Unstoppable Growth
No surprises here—Reliance Jio is still the king of Indian telecom. In April alone, they added a whopping 26.4 lakh new users, pushing their total subscriber count to over 47.2 crore. That’s nearly half of India’s population relying on Jio for calls, data, and those endless WhatsApp forwards.
Airtel, holding steady in second place, managed to scoop up 1.7 lakh new users, taking their total to 38.9 crore. Not as explosive as Jio’s growth, but hey, at least they’re not bleeding subscribers like some others.

BSNL and Vi’s Struggle Continues
BSNL had a rough month, losing 1.55 lakh subscribers after two months of (minor) gains. Their total user base now stands at 9.09 crore, which, let’s be honest, isn’t great when you’re up against Jio’s dominance.
Then there’s Vi (formerly Vodafone Idea), which just can’t catch a break. They lost a staggering 6.47 lakh users in April, shrinking their base to 20.47 crore. At this rate, they might soon be fighting to stay in the top three.

The Bigger Picture
- Total mobile subscribers in India? A mind-blowing 1,158.9 crore (yes, that’s over a billion).
- New users added in April? 19.45 lakh—so the market is still growing, just not for everyone.
- Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests? A massive 134.8 lakh people looking to switch providers.
- Broadband users? Slightly dipped from 94.4 crore to 94.3 crore.
What’s Next?
Jio’s aggressive pricing and 5G push seem to be paying off, while BSNL and Vi desperately need a game-changer. Will 5G rollout or better plans turn things around? Or is this just the beginning of a two-player race between Jio and Airtel?
One thing’s clear—if you’re in the telecom game, you better bring your A-game, or you’ll be left behind.
