If a reduced Royal Challengers Bangalore attack deflated the power-packed Mumbai Indians in the scoring runs at Chinnaswamy Stadium, imagine what they may achieve at the more pace-friendly Eden Gardens opposite Kolkata Knight Riders’ weak top six.

Against Punjab Kings’ bowling attack, which does not appear to be the most dangerous in the playoffs, Knight Riders were 146 for 7 in 16 overs, with no marquee names in their top six, which managed a combined 90 runs off 74 balls, putting too much pressure on Andre Russell’s weathered knees and shoulders. The addition of Jason Roy is a significant boost, but he will not be available for this game.

They must match the Royal Challengers’ ferocious top order on Thursday. Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli hit flaming half-centuries in the last encounter, smashing 11 sixes and as many fours. Even if the Knight Riders are unable to recreate their previous performance, they will want to put on a stronger display in front of their home audience.

Wanindu Hasaranga and Josh Hazlewood are yet to join the Royal Challengers roster, and Rajat Patidar has already been ruled out of the competition. Reece Topley, their left-arm quick who snagged Cameron Green with a scorching yorker in their previous game, injured his right shoulder severely while fielding and flew to Kolkata with his arm draped in a sling. They can replace David Willey with a similar bowling substitute.

Roy will join the Knight Riders in preparation for Sunday’s encounter in Ahmedabad, while Litton Das will come in from Dhaka following the upcoming Ireland Test. Lockie Ferguson, who also missed their first game, is still bowling with only half a run-up and is unlikely to participate.
