On late Sunday night, a five-story under-construction building collapsed in Kolkata’s congested Garden Reach area. The incident prompted the police and disaster management personnel to evacuate ten people while searching for anyone else who could be trapped.

The event took just around midnight, with locals stating that initially, concrete chunks started falling off the under-construction building. Later, the entire structure fell, with portions falling on nearby homes in the densely populated region.

What Police said on Kolkata Building Collapse?

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and senior officers, disaster management, and fire service officials quickened to the scene.

“We saved some people who were injured in the ruins. They have been hospitalized. Rescue activities are underway, and we are looking for anyone trapped in the wreckage. There have been no reports of deaths thus far. A senior police official stated, “It is a congested area, and we are taking all precautions while searching it.”

According to neighbors, the structure has been under construction for six months. Locals also claimed the building lacked permits from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the police.

According to rescuers, gas cutters were put to work to cut through the collapsed structures and search for survivors. Ambulances have been on standby. A police officer stated “The structure was empty, but it toppled onto nearby slum neighborhoods. “People were sleeping there”.

In a post on X, Suvendu Adhikari, BJP MLA and opposition leader in the state assembly, wrote: “A 5-story building (illegally constructed) has collapsed at Hazari Mollah Bagan; Garden Reach; Metiabruz, KMC Ward No. 134.” This region is inside the so-called ‘citadel’ of the Hon’ble Mayor of Kolkata and Municipal Affairs Minister. I urge @chief_west, Secretary @HomeBengal, and @CPKolkata to mobilize the West Bengal State Disaster Management Team for prompt rescue and relief.”
