Mahindra is quietly laying the groundwork for its next big SUV push, and at the centre of that plan is a new vehicle architecture called NU_IQ. First previewed with a trio of striking concept models earlier this year, the platform is expected to support a range of compact and midsize SUVs when production models begin rolling out from 2027.
Industry watchers believe the first real-world product on this architecture could be a compact SUV inspired by the Vision S concept — often described as a “baby Scorpio N” — with multiple test mules already spotted on Indian roads.
What is NU_IQ and why it matters
Unlike Mahindra’s older platforms that were designed around a single powertrain type, NU_IQ has been built as a flexible base from day one. It is engineered to support petrol, diesel and fully electric powertrains, allowing the company to develop different versions of the same vehicle for India and global markets.

This modular approach helps reduce development costs, speeds up model rollouts and allows Mahindra to stay agile as emission norms and buyer preferences continue to evolve.
Compact SUVs back on Mahindra’s priority list
One of the biggest shifts in strategy is Mahindra’s renewed focus on the sub-four-metre SUV segment. This category was never a core strength for the brand, but that thinking has changed after tax revisions and the strong response to the XUV 3XO.
While Mahindra continues to dominate the larger 4.5-metre SUV space, compact SUVs are now being seen as a volume driver — especially in urban markets where buyers want rugged styling in a city-friendly footprint.
Vision concepts hint at what’s coming
The Vision S, Vision X and Vision T concepts give a clear preview of how Mahindra plans to use the NU_IQ platform.
The Vision S is widely expected to evolve into a compact, everyday version of the Scorpio N, combining familiar design cues with a smaller footprint. Vision X points towards a crossover-style SUV aimed at younger buyers, while Vision T has already confirmed Mahindra’s intent to build an electric-only Thar-style lifestyle vehicle.
Global strategy and EV confidence
Mahindra’s product push is being backed by a broader global strategy. South Africa has emerged as a key test market, where the company is prioritising dealer expansion, service support and parts availability before aggressively chasing volumes.
Behind the scenes, confidence has also grown thanks to the strong response to Mahindra’s born-electric models. More than 30,000 EVs have reportedly been sold within months of launch, with a large number of buyers being first-time Mahindra customers.

To keep up this momentum, the company is strengthening ties with global suppliers in electronics, safety systems and digital tech. The goal is clear: bring advanced features and software-driven capabilities to market faster, without disrupting production timelines.
If all goes to plan, NU_IQ could mark the start of Mahindra’s most versatile and future-ready SUV lineup yet.
