History

The Ministry of Women and Child Development launched National Girl Child Day in 2008. Since then, the day has been commemorated across India with a consistent annual theme. The initiative attempted to recognize the special issues that girls experience in a culture contending with gender inequity, educational limits, school dropouts, healthcare, child marriage, and gender-based violence.

Theme

So yet, the government has not announced a theme for National Girl Child Day 2024.

Notably, in 2019, the theme was ‘Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow’. The 2020 theme was ‘My Voice, Our Common Future’. “Digital Generation, Our Generation” was the topic for National Girl Child Day in 2021.

Why is it celebrated on January 24?

Every year on January 24, National Girl Child Day commemorates the anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s introduction of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Scheme (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child) on January 22, 2015.
