Parliament Special Session LIVE updates: On Day 2, the debate on the Women’s Reservation Bill (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam) resumed, with the Centre and the Opposition exchanging barbs. The Bill’s presentation was termed a “election jumla” and a “huge betrayal of women’s hopes” by Congress. Sonia Gandhi, the Congress Parliamentary Party’s Chairperson, led her party’s debate on the Bill in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
The Union government submitted the Bill during the first day of the five-day special session in Parliament, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi declaring, “This historic day of September 19th, 2023 is going to be immortal in the history of India.” Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Bill during the Lok Sabha’s inaugural session at the new Parliament building. He stressed that the government is taking a stride towards women’s empowerment by presenting a new Bill to reserve one-third of all Lok Sabha and state legislative assembly seats for women.
Meghwal went on to say that if the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is passed, the number of Lok Sabha seats for women will rise to 181.
