Ranveer Singh’s spy thriller Dhurandhar is making waves across the border for reasons no one quite expected. Despite being officially banned in Pakistan, the film has reportedly become the most pirated Indian movie in the country’s recent history, with illegal downloads crossing the 2 million mark within just two weeks of release.
According to reports cited by news agency IANS, the piracy numbers for Dhurandhar have surpassed those of earlier big-ticket Indian releases such as Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Rajinikanth’s 2.0, both of which had also faced restrictions in Pakistan.

Why Dhurandhar Is Banned in Pakistan
Pakistani authorities reportedly blocked the official release of Dhurandhar due to objections over its storyline. The film’s narrative touches on sensitive historical events linked to cross-border terrorism and espionage, with parts set in Karachi’s Lyari area.
Officials and analysts flagged concerns over the portrayal of internal security issues and what they described as “anti-Pakistan” undertones. Following this, the film was denied certification for release not just in Pakistan but also in several Gulf countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the UAE.
Piracy Thrives Despite Restrictions
Ironically, the ban appears to have fuelled curiosity rather than curbed viewership. Reports suggest that Pakistani audiences are accessing Dhurandhar through torrent sites, Telegram channels, VPN services and overseas streaming links.
Industry observers note that such underground consumption highlights a recurring trend—films that face bans often gain a different kind of traction, especially among younger, tech-savvy audiences.
Music Finds an Unexpected Audience
While the film remains officially unavailable, its music has struck a chord in Pakistan. A video that recently went viral on social media shows Pakistani politician Bilawal Bhutto Zardari arriving at an event where the Dhurandhar track FA9LA was played in the background.

The song, picturised on Akshaye Khanna’s character in the film, caught public attention precisely because it was played at a public gathering, even as the movie itself remains prohibited.
Box Office Performance So Far
Back home, Dhurandhar continues its strong run at the box office. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film opened with Rs 28 crore on its first day in India. Although collections dipped on day 14—its second Thursday—the film still managed to add Rs 23 crore to its tally.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Dhurandhar has so far earned Rs 460.25 crore at the Indian box office and around Rs 680 crore worldwide within two weeks of release, cementing its status as one of the biggest Hindi films of the year.
