    Axpertv media google source

Tata Motors has finally answered a long-standing demand by introducing petrol-powered versions of its flagship SUVs — the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari. Until now, both models were sold exclusively with a diesel engine. The new petrol option adds flexibility to the lineup, especially for buyers wary of long-term diesel ownership.

At the heart of this update is a brand-new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, marking a significant shift in Tata’s powertrain strategy for its premium SUVs.

A New Petrol Engine Under the Hood

Both the Harrier and Safari now come equipped with Tata’s newly developed 1.5-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol engine. It produces 170 PS of power and 280 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful petrol engine currently offered by Tata in India.

The engine is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic, with power sent to the front wheels.

    Key engine specifications

    • Engine: 1.5-litre turbo-petrol
    • Power: 170 PS
    • Torque: 280 Nm
    • Transmission: 6-speed manual / 6-speed automatic
    • Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive

Exterior: Familiar Design, New Paint Options

Visually, the petrol versions are identical to their diesel counterparts. Both SUVs retain their bold stance, wide bonnet, split LED headlamp setup, and muscular body lines.

The Safari continues with its boxy silhouette and upright tailgate, while the Harrier sticks to a sportier profile. Ground clearance and overall dimensions remain unchanged.

Tata has also brought back the popular Red Dark Editions, featuring a blacked-out exterior with subtle red accents. Additionally, the Harrier gets a new Nitro Crimson paint option to freshen things up.

Interior: Premium Cabin With Tech Upgrades

Inside, the petrol Harrier and Safari mirror the layout and finish of the diesel models. Higher variants get a large 14.5-inch QLED touchscreen infotainment system, which now anchors the dashboard.

Material quality remains a strong point, with soft-touch surfaces, ambient lighting, and ventilated front seats. The Red Dark variants add Carnelian Red leatherette upholstery and darker interior accents for a sportier feel.

The Safari continues to offer three-row seating with captain seat and bench options in the second row, while the Harrier remains a strictly two-row SUV.

    Features: Loaded as Ever

Feature-wise, Tata hasn’t cut any corners. Both SUVs come with a 10-speaker JBL sound system with Dolby Atmos, delivering one of the better audio experiences in the segment.

    Other highlights include:

    • Panoramic sunroof
    • Digital inside rear-view mirror
    • Powered and ventilated front seats
    • Dual-zone climate control
    • Ambient lighting
    • Air purifier

Tata continues its generous variant spread across Smart, Pure, Adventure, Accomplished, and Fearless trims, with special editions sitting at the top.

    Safety: Still a Strong Suit

Safety remains unchanged — and that’s good news. The petrol Harrier and Safari retain their 5-star Bharat NCAP rating.

Standard and higher-end safety features include:

    • Level 2 ADAS suite
    • 7 airbags
    • Electronic stability control
    • Electronic parking brake with auto-hold
    • All-wheel disc brakes
    • 360-degree camera
    • Front and rear parking sensors

    Why the Petrol Option Matters

This petrol engine launch is particularly relevant for buyers in regions like Delhi-NCR, where diesel vehicles face a 10-year usage cap. The petrol Harrier and Safari now offer a more future-proof option without compromising on size, features, or road presence.

For many customers who liked the SUVs but hesitated due to diesel-only availability, this update could be the final nudge.
